"What Can I Bring?" The Good Neighbor Cookbook
Were you as impressed as I was with Tracy's week of cooking when her sister welcomed a new baby? I've talked before about how I think food is the best gift we can offer new parents, and now there's a book that offers some help with that. "The Good Neighbor Cookbook" has recipes, advice on organizing a "meal train" for new parents, and helpful tips aimed at less-experienced cooks. It's not limited to new-baby dishes; it's also got suggested recipes for what to bring a new neighbor, a sick friend, a block party, and more.
Of course, there's plenty of potential crossover depending on your tastes (and your neighbors). This recipe for Almond Ginger Bars is technically in the "book club" chapter of the book, but I'd try it for any of these options (or for my own family)!

Almond Ginger Bars
Ingredients:
For the crust:
2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1/2 cup sugar
14 tablespoons (1 3/4 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
For the filling:
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups sliced almonds
2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter or spray a 9x13 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
2. For the crust, in a food processor, pulse the flour, sugar, butter, and salt until it is crumbly and holds together when squeezed. Using your fingers, press the dough evenly over the bottom and 1/2-inch up the sides of the prepared pan. Bake until lightly golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, for the filling, in a small saucepan over medum-high heat, combine the cream and sugar; bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the almonds and ginger. Pour the mixture over the warm crust, making sure the almonds are evenly distributed.
4. Bake until the almonds are a light golden brown and the edges are crisp, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool for at least 1 hour on a wire rack before slicing. Store in an airtight container for up to four days.

I do the gift of meals for relatives, neighbors and my daughter-in-law when the grandson was born. Sure wish someone would do it for us!
