Last-Minute Gifts
Looking for a last-minute gift that won't scream "last minute"? Consider pre-orders. Some fabulous food books are coming up in the next few months, and a card explaining "I ordered this wonderful book for you, and it will be delivered hot off the presses" seems more thought-out than picking a current title and confessing "I ordered this too late for Christmas delivery." Besides, just think how prescient you'll look when books like Kurt Timmermeister's "Growing A Farmer" start showing up on the 2011 best-of lists.
A few suggestions:
1. "Growing A Farmer" by Kurt Timmermeister: I dogeared page after page in my advance copy of this book, savoring the lovely prose, the entertaining stories, the practical information, and the clear, reasoned philosophy. It's the story of how Timmermeister transformed a piece of land into a farm, and transformed a city chef into a true farmer.
2. "Good Fish" by Becky Selengut: Those who read Selengut's blog already know she's smart, funny, curious, and passionate as hell about food. In this book, she'll be focusing that passion on sustainable seafood, doing her best to, as she puts it, "simplify some very complicated issues" as well as create stellar recipes. She's also an accomplished personal chef who earned her chops cooking under Jerry Traunfeld at The Herbfarm.
3. "West Coast Road Eats" by Anna Roth: Galleys aren't available for this one yet, but I know Roth and her work, and that's enough to tell me that I''ll be taking this guide with me on future road trips. It covers the coast from San Diego to the Canadian border.
Any other books available for pre-order that should be on our list? Let us know.

Food is another thoughtful gift that will be appreciated and will not contribute to post-holiday mess. Restaurant gift certificates are popular. Parents of children often can not afford to pay for dinner.
