Hooray for the Happy Hour!
The new year is fast approaching, but instead of going full steam ahead, I'm taking one last glance at the food trends of 2009. And one of my fondest was the explosion of Happy Hours.
For years now, the Heathman Hotel in Portland has served my favorite Happy Hour, whipping up Northwest favorites--at great prices--and serving them in the hotel's charming Tea Court or old-world Marble Bar. It's still going strong, though this year the menu is more expansive than ever, the hours are even more generous, 2 pm 'til close every day, and the service, as always, top notch.
In one evening with friends we managed to consume more than a dozen delicious plates. There were oysters on the half shell. Anchovy boquerones. Pumpkin ravioli and macaroni and cheese. Beet salad, pear salad, and Caesar salad. One huge roasted marrow bone, as well as a charcuterie, cheese, paté, and even a Picklopolis Pickle platter. Now that was one happy hour!
Have you taken advantage of the Happy Hour phenomenon? What was your favorite watering hole?
