Bar Snacks: A Taste of India

Punjab-sweets If you're tired of serving the same old peanuts or potato chips with drinks before dinner, why not instead try the sweet, salty, and spicy flavors of India?

When I'm hankering for some snacks with with a little more pizazz than the the common beer nut, I head to Punjab Sweets. This tiny restaurant and bakery in Kent, Washington offers a large assortment of delicious homemade Indian snacks, the perfect answer to bar snack fatigue.

Crispy sweet and savory snacks are traditional fare in an Indian home and are served with tea whenever guests come calling. The most common of these snacks, Matri, is a deep-fried Indian style noodle, seasoned with traditional spices.

Other savory snacks may include dried green peas, chickpeas and lentils, spiced with garam masala, turmeric and fenugreek. Sweet offerings such as Shakarparay and Mitti Seerni are addictive teeny tiny pastries coated in sugar.

Punjab Sweets offers (both in-store and online) more than a dozen dried Indian snacks, all nice to have on hand for entertaining invited or unexpected guests. And while these delicious snacks are traditionally served with tea, I think they're a great way to spice up the cocktail hour.
