Chocolate Prices Rise

Unless you've been reading the business and commodities headlines closely, you may have missed that cocoa prices have increased. (via Wall Street Journal and BBC News) There has been a supply shortage caused in part by crop diseases in Ivory Coast and Ghana. It seems that retailers chose to take a bit of a loss for Valentine's Day sales this year to keep prices in line with customer expectation.
I don't know what this means for my beloved Cadbury Mini Easter Egg candy, but I sure hope chocolate manufacturers aren't considering a reduction in chocolate quality again.

I've noticed that the "prices" are the same at the drug store for Easter candy, but the sizes of the packages are smaller. It doesn't really bug me, I understand that when you live long enough you remember how much stuff used to cost, even if it was just two or three years ago. So I picked up a bag of Hershey's Candy Coated Eggs which was only 8 ounces where last year it was 9 ounces. Still, it was only $1.70 on sale, which is still a pretty good deal.
Thankfully I'm still finding my favorite Russell Stover Eggs on sale for 44 cents each everywhere. Now that's a good deal! (Of course there's not really that much chocolate in there.)
