Bacon Makes the World Go Round
Last week I tweeted at Ruth Reichl. I wanted to know if she thought bacon would be as big in 2009 as it was in 2008. No response from Ruth (yet!), but I already know the answer. No, it won't be as big--it will be BIGGER.
As if you really need proof of this, witness the Bacon Explosion. Not only has basically every food (or otherwise) blog now reported on this gut buster, but even the New York Times is in on it. Plus, I don't think a day goes by that I don't get an email from some foodie site staking their claim to the bacon obsession. Entire websites are devoted to bacon. And, well, here I am, blogging about bacon. Oh, the irony.
As you know, we here at Al Dente are fond of our Twitter followers--more than 1,000 of you now--thanks everyone! As I've been reading your tweets, it has dawned on me that an abnormal portion of them do in fact discuss bacon. Here are a selection of my favorites from the past week. Get your bacon on!
- RrieSelavy : Bacon is proof God loves omnivores. Avocado is proof she loves vegetarians.
- kidsleepy : i overnapped, but i dreamt about bacon - trade off?
- justinderekrich : Man vows to eat nothing but bacon for a month. I think I've found my long-lost brother. http://tinyurl.com/dx5aog
- suttonhoo : for fear of stating the obvious: cephalopods are the new bacon. http://suttonhoo.blogspot.com/2009/02/belated.html
- mmcallen : @webby2001 mmmmmm bacon
- paul_burger : @iowarealestate Bacon + Magic Shell = Heaven on Earth
- reedracer : Bacon is meat candy
- fawndue: I would like to call attention to the fact that there has been very little tweeting about bacon lately. Let's step it up folks.
- Nosredna: @fawndue Is there bacon coffee? I want a cup of that.
- Shazzib : We made tandoori bacon for dinner. I can't even describe the foodgasm I got from it.
- IndecisiveGirl : had ridiculous amounts of bacon today. Clearly it was a good day.
- mrtroi : @ScotMcKay That's cuz bacon has become the banner symbol of decadence. Bacon is freedom from the confines of society in yummy meat strips.
- ccsont : Bill claims there are better things than bacon. I am skeptical.
After all this bacon talk, you may feel the need for a little soul and palate cleansing. Haiku are wonderful for that. Especially haiku about bacon.

Don't forget that February is "Bacon Stupidity Month", too for MST3K alum Mike Nelson! He's eating nothing but sweet bacon, all month long...
