The Hot Beef Sundae

Yesterday, Serious Eats reported on the Hot Beef Sundae trend that's sweeping the country. The dish can be found across the nation at state fairs from Florida to Nebraska. The Hot Beef Sundae is comprised of mashed potatoes, roast beef, more mashed potatoes, gravy, cheese, and a cherry tomato.

I love that someone registered BeefSundae.com to promote it.

The obesity problem is out of control in the United States. Promoting gluttony like this can only contribute to the problem getting worse. According to an article by Bonnie Liebman in the September issue of "Nutrition Action Healthletter," 24 million Americans now have diabetes, and 1 out of 4 Americans aged 60 or older have the disease. Obesity rates are skyrocketing along with the incidence of diabetes, as of 2001 20-24% of people in most states were obese, and the trend is only getting worse.
The steak sundae may be a sight to see, but those who try to duplicate it will do so at the expense of their own health. Maybe a steak sundae is so enjoyable that it is worth a triple bypass and your senior years in a nursing home instead of travelling.

Wow, Jacqueline. Dial it down a bit. Okay, this isn't exactly health food. But nobody ever got fat after one good meal. It's up to individuals to make their own intelligent choices about food. Nobody will get healthier just because food writers stopped talking about indulgent meals.

Man, nobody better tell her about the Turducken.

This doesn't look very good...but it sounds fairly good. Except for the gravy dripping down it's sides.

That looks like a heart attack in a bowl! There is absolutely nothing about that picture that appeals to me, except for the healthy looking veggies that are NOT in the bowl. ICK!

Jacqueline, Pat - This is really so simple, if you don't like it or want it, don't buy it or eat it.
Tell you what, I'll make you a deal: you don't tell me I can't eat seal meat, I won't tell you not to eat tofu. Deal?

I responded to this blog because I saw it on the Amazon.com website on Sept. 3rd. Although I didn't mention it on my last comment, I am a Registered Dietitian and I do feel a responsibility to tell people what is healthy or unhealthy to eat. The food items involved wouldn't be bad if consumed in moderation, but heaping enormous portions onto each other just for some binger's dream is definitely not healthy. Yes, it is your right to write about whatever food strikes you. If you link your blog to Amazon.com and I see it when I go shopping there, it is my right and responsibility to comment. If you want coronary artery disease, just continue to do what you're doing!!!

I don't want to be told what to eat by a nosey, bossy stranger on the internet. Thanks.
