Italian Wine Goes Green (Amid Groans)
Italy's Agricultural Ministry recently announced that in an effort to reduce carbon footprints, some of their wines may now be sold in boxes. The lighter packaging would generate about half the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the transportation of bottled wine. Boxed wine also keeps longer--a box preserves open wine for about four weeks, compared to the day or two an opened wine remains good in a glass bottle. In the past fews years, more and more wine sellers have jumped on the boxed wine bandwagon, but hopefully the news from Italy will convince producers everywhere to consider making their packaging more eco-friendly.
