Lovely New Kitchen Gear: Costa Brava St. Germain Wine Tools
Attractive as well as functional, Costa Brava’s new line of St. Germain wine accessories are almost hard to use--not because they aren’t user-friendly (they’re a snap to work with), but because they look so exquisite, like art in a way, that you wouldn’t want to take a chance of dripping on them. Of course, many wine drinkers think of wine as art (and I suppose drinking is a sort of art, as is the making of drinks and serving of wine) so the pairing is really perfect. The Costa Brava St. Germain line has a number of sets and pieces in varying finishes, including a classic twist-top corkscrew, a vacuum preserver (with rubber stoppers and the vacuum piece designed to protect a wine’s properties over time), drip stopper, foil cutter, and (this is my favorite) a pneumatic wine opener. It (as well as many of the other pieces) has a design featuring a native Argentinean hardwood called “incense wood,” and a look somewhat like the world’s most elegant ice pick. It’s much cooler than that, though. The stainless steel needle pierces a cork, and then the up-and-down movements force internal pressure to smoothly push up the cork. Easy as that--and gorgeous to boot.
