Grilled Twinkies--A New Family Tradition?

Inspired by the Accidental Hedonist's angel food cake idea and the Twinkies Cookbook my husband gave me for my birthday, last weekend we threw a few Twinkies on the grill. They were quite tasty, actually. Crisp and warm on the outside, and gooey on the inside. They'd probably be great with some chocolate tucked in while grilling--a Twinkie s'more! Feast your eyes:

I could give that a try.

Several years ago, after a frozen food party I was hosting didn't finish off the monster-sized box of frozen corndogs, I did the only thing I could think of to get rid of them quickly: I grilled them at a friend's barbecue. And now grilled corndogs have become quite the barbecue tradition amongst my friends.

NO, NO, NO, you dumb SOBs...you gotta deep-fry 'em. You put a big ol' pot of peanut oil on a burner and when it's good 'n hot, you dip the Twinkies in for a couple a minutes.

You ain't been in the South long enough to even learn how to fry a Twinkie? Go back to where you came from.

Re: Deep Fry Twinkie...

Now we're talking! They did that a few years back at the San Diego Fair! AMAZING!

Even deep fried is Unamerican, You're not an American until you have eaten a butter fried bacon ball

Jesus H. Christ, do you ever clean your grill? I've seen Auschwitz grilling chambers cleaner than yours. Yech.

I tried this on the 4th thanks to seeing it here and everyone who tried them liked them a lot. Thanks for the tip!
Next time, I'm trying the grilled angel food cake. That has to be good too.

Bill you are right about deep frying, proper southerners will deep fry about anything. Is there much that isn't good deep fried?

I made deep-fried twinkies the other night, and they were delicious! I rolled the twinkie in Krusteaz pancake mix first though; I am not certain that the twinkie cake could withstand the oil in the fryer. You really only need to have the twinkie in the fryer for a minute or so as the batter turns a light golden brown. The consistency of the filling improves greatly as the twinkie heats. We served 'em with a fruit glaze made from oranges, pineapple juice, corn starch and a raspberry liqueur. Delicious.
