Weird Food Cravings
MSNBC.com recently posted some of the weird food cravings their readers have. Apparently craving peanut butter burgers or banana bacon sandwiches doesn't mean you're missing something from your diet. "Scientists haven't been able to link cravings in humans to specific nutritional deficiencies, says Joy Bauer, TODAY's nutrition expert and author of "Food Cures" (Rodale, 2007)."
Around the Al Dente office, cravings include pickles and cheese with smoked salmon, bacon with chocolate, Lay's sour cream and onion chips with M&M's, and Pringles dipped in coffee yogurt.
So, Al Dente readers, what are your weird food cravings? Maybe ice cream and ramen?

Every six months or so I'll give in to temptation, go to Wendy's, and dip my fries into my frosty.

on chicken strips or on baloney and cheese sandwiches, mix one part caesar salad dressing and one part plum sauce
Discovered it because I ran out of plum sauce and the chicken strips need something so I put caesar on half
But where they mixed? mmmmmm-BOY! that is good

My big weakness has always been strong-onion-and-hot-mustard sandwich on seeded rye bread toast. Occasionally, I also crave fresh scallions dipped in refried beans and then into sour cream. When I get one of those cravings, I'm grateful I don't work in direct contact with the public. I'm pretty sure the public will be grateful, too!

My little sister made me this one when I asked her for a sandwich one to many times. Two pieces of bread, peanut butter, bacon bits, lettuce, and ham. I loved it. I still eat it to this day.

Really GOOD limburger cheese from Pennsylvania, on fresh deli rye bread, topped with sweet onion slices.
The only thing my mother-in-law and I ever agreed on.

Pica is the term used to describe odd food cravings in pregnancy. I had a patient years ago who admitted having eaten rolls and rolls of toilet paper during her pregnancy. She was too embarrassed to tell me until after she delivered and her cravings ceased. That has to top the list of weird food cravings for me.

Not exactly weird, but I often crave these...
Cottage cheese with garbanzo beans and red wine vinegar.
Saltines topped with really sharp cheddar cheese, bread-and-butter pickles, and plain yellow mustard.
Definitely agree with the other lovers of french fries (hot, salty and crisp) dipped in a chocolate milkshake.
And finally, my grandmother's specialty--a slice of grilled dark rye bread topped with a grilled hot dog (sliced down the middle) topped with caraway-seed cheese and toasted under the broiler. Yum-yum!

My boyfriend eats a concoction he calls banana mush. It is mashed banana, peanut butter, mayo, and sugar. He mops white bread in it and eats it. Strangely, I have heard some variations on this basic theme. He also eats sandwiches of white bread, raisins, and mayo. I tried it and it is actually palatable.

Um. I just finished a bowl of ice cream with vinegar, maple syrup and montreal steak spice. It was just about the most perfect thing I've ever eaten.
