Your KitchenAid Color Horoscope
Over the holidays I went over to my friend Jill's house for the first time. When I entered her kitchen I immediately exclaimed, "You have a GRAPE KitchenAid mixer!" Yes, I may be a little bit insane, but this was one of the highlights of the holiday season for me. You see, other people go to friends' houses and secretly peek in their medicine cabinets. Me, I stroll into the kitchen and check out the color of KitchenAid mixer the person has. This one detail speaks volumes about a person.
Now a grape KitchenAid mixer is truly extraordinary. Not many people can pull this off. Grape says that the owner is bold, daring, and perhaps a little bit quirky. And most of all, cool. Very, very cool.
I personally lust after the grape KitchenAid mixer. I would probably never have it, but I want it. I want to be that cool. Instead, I have a cobalt KitchenAid mixer, and it is a prized possession, if not a little bit basic. Cobalt is like having a black or white one, but with a little bit more charm. A person with a cobalt mixer wants the splash of color, but is afraid of going too far.
People with black or white mixers have classic sensabilities. They are generally not making a style statement with their mixer. It may blend in with the kitchen, or it may fit a somewhat austere black and white décor. Or, perhaps they just got it as a gift and the gift giver didn't know what color to get!
People with the newer chrome and other metallic models, probably have modern kitchens, filled with stainless-steel appliances. These people tend to be quite stylish, and often clean-cut.
But, it's those people with actual colors, like grape, that really make a commitment to their sense of style. Grape, tangerine, ice, wasabi (!)--these people have it going on.
What's your KitchenAid color profile?

White. But not for the reasons you list. Because it was the color on sale on Amazon when I purchased it.
I have to admit that it does work well since the kitchen is one area where I really can't make up my mind for colors. I'd rather have a metallic one, but I'm just too practical (or poor?) to justify ever getting another one as long as my on-sale white one continues to function.

White. Because that's what I found at a garage sale for $15.

Ours is battleship grey/gray, but we've got the next larger size.

The 5-quart is Yellow because that was the "in" color when we bought it eons ago (actually made by Hobart, I am pretty sure).
We since have added a standard gray 12-quart Hobart (used, ex-Omaha Press Club we are told).

Martha Stewart green. It was love at first sight. I sigh each time I look at it.

Red. The grape one was the blender of my dreams, but the red one was on sale. The red one is nice in my kitchen, though.

I started off white (stand mixer, blender, FP), but I now have cobalt mixers (Artisan and 9-speed hand-held)
I stay away from chrome or brushed steel, especially the shiny kind, as I hate cleaning fingerprints...had it on a (not KA) coffee maker...never again (and I will never buy a major appliance with it if I can help it!)

White, with red pinstriping. Inspired by Alton Brown's flamed mixer.

Would you believe Harvest Gold? Yes, I bought it, used, in 1978 in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, from another Expat there. I've looked at the newer colors many times, but mine just won't break so I just hide it under the counter so people don't laugh.

I was also inspired by Alton Brown, and had some paint left over after working on my boat. So mine is candy apple red with black accents.

Silver sage! Sometimes I just stare at it. And sigh.

DSinope - I like that idea. I have a blue one, but was thinking that maybe a nice candy paint job, maybe some pinstriping - that would rock my kitchen.

I have a white one; it was a wedding gift. I hadn't looked at the colors in years, and was curious about the wasabi, it sounds delightful. But then I saw the copper pearl and that's all she wrote.
I must say, I have had excellent results lately with Rustoleum Metallic copper spray paint. We just redid our kitchen and I wanted copper accents. I had a clock that had a gold frame which is now copper, and gorgeous. Various friends have been impressed also. It's cheap and what do you have to lose, as long as you're very thorough with the masking tape? Go for it.

"Harvest Gold"! That's what we have, not "Yellow"!
How quickly we forget. At one time the whole danged kitchen was that color.

White. That's the color of the item on sale at ebay. In fact, mine is so old it could be yours grandmother. Mine is a 4-C and very basic workhorse. If anybody wants to give me a brand new grape one, or just a brand new one, I'm not at all shy.
z_pastry_chef on January 06, 2008 at 08:00 AM
I currently have the citron, because that was the only "green" at the time. It was just a few years later that the Green Apple came out which is the green I truly desire. But I love my citron and it suits me just fine. Recently I added the 14 cup bowl lift in Silver Sage. I don't have a modern kitchen, yet, but they are both my prized possessions and make me feel like I have a fancier kitchen than I do:)

Mine is red, but I have this fantasy having a whole rainbow of KitchenAids and being able to change them seasonally, for major holidays, etc.
justme on January 08, 2008 at 11:15 PM
Cobalt, because I got it as a gift and grape didn't exist yet. The Cobalt is a lovely blue, as blues go. But, oh, how I'd love to have the grape!
Jeanne on January 11, 2008 at 09:32 PM
so are you saying that it can successfully be painted with rustoleum? I love the hammer metal finish-I revitalized a lamp last summer. And I too just redid my kitchen and wanted o cover the almond 15 year old kitchen aid....
Andrea Lin on January 12, 2008 at 04:54 PM
I have a colored Kitchenaid, yes I do. I would choose for myself the Empire Red or possibly Cinnamon.... but mine was a gift thoughtfully scored from a table at a garage sale for $25!
So, I use the Cobalt Blue thing and love it, anyway. :-)

(Sigh) You are all so young. My mixer has a green handle, and I turn it with the other hand. What is all this gold and cobalt and chrome stuff? Mine even has variable speeds, until I get tired.

Hi,
My wife has a Kitchenaid/Hobart mixer (5qt.) that she loves. I am trying to find her a professional 600 (6qt) to add to her collection but she really would like the 'Silver Sage' color. Of course this is the only color that either I can't find or is out of stock (besides Kitchen website). Any suggestions where 'Silver Sage' might be hiding? Thanks ...
